Crate training a 3-year-old rescue — is it too late or just harder?

Adopted Mango (3-year-old Pit Bull mix) 5 weeks ago. He's never been crate trained. When we first tried putting him in, he panicked — panting, scratching, full meltdown. We backed off immediately.
We've been working slowly since: door open, treats tossed inside, feeding meals near the crate. He'll now eat inside with the door open and seems relaxed in there. But the second we close the door he panics again.
Is 3 years old too old to crate train? Should we keep going with this approach or try something different?

Not too late at all — you're actually doing the right protocol. The key next step: start closing the door for 1-2 seconds while he's eating, then open before he finishes. Gradually extend to 5 seconds, 10, 30. The panic happens because he's been closed in before he's truly relaxed inside. Also try a well-worn T-shirt of yours in there — familiar scent helps enormously with rescue anxiety. Three years of habits take longer to change but they absolutely do change with consistency.

Consider asking your vet about short-term situational anxiety support while you build the crate association. Something like Adaptil (DAP diffuser) near the crate can help lower baseline anxiety enough for the training to stick. It's not a forever solution, just scaffolding.

It took me 8 weeks with my adult rescue Beagle who had the same reaction. Painfully slow progression but it worked. She now goes in voluntarily at night. Don't rush the door-closing stage — that's where most people jump ahead.
