Nico was likely not crate trained before us. Night routine: potty, short play, crate with chew. He escalates from whine to full scream. We've never let him out mid-scream but 40 min feels cruel.
Daytime crate = 20 min quiet with treats. Nights are different planet.
What actually worked for you in week 2–3 without teaching "scream = freedom"?

Exhaust before crate (training games, not just zoomies). Crate next to bed 3 nights — hand on crate, release calm not scream. Gradual move away.
Also: smaller crate footprint, cover, white noise. Daytime success doesn't always transfer to night — separate training.

Feliway + frozen towel Kong was boring for Buster but for our friends' pup it cut night noise a lot. Not magic, just took edge off.
