What do I actually need vs what's marketing hype when setting up for a new dog?

Picking up my rescue (2-year-old mutt, 40 lbs) in two weeks. I've been down the rabbit hole of pet supply lists and I genuinely can't tell what's essential vs what's a $40 gadget I'll never use.

Current list: crate, dog bed, collar + leash, ID tag, food + water bowls, food, poop bags, basic grooming brush, nail clippers. Is there anything critical I'm missing? And what did you buy that you immediately regretted?

Your list is solid. Things I'd add: a long line (20-30 ft) for yard recall training before you trust off-leash, a Kong or puzzle feeder for crate acclimation, and enzymatic cleaner (Nature's Miracle) because you will have accidents even with a 2-year-old. Things I regret: a $60 automatic water fountain my dog ignored, a fancy harness before I knew her gait, and every "calming" supplement I bought in month one.

Don't buy the nail clippers yet. Most first-time owners aren't comfortable with them and end up stressing the dog. Use a groomer for the first 3-4 months while you build trust with the dog and learn where the quick is. The $15-20 groomer nail trim is worth it early on.

Pet insurance — sign up before you pick her up if possible. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, so the earlier you get coverage the better. It saved me $1,200 in year one.

Skip the dog bed for the first month. Let her sleep in the crate or on an old blanket until you know if she's a chewer. You'll thank me when she doesn't destroy a $60 orthopedic bed on day 3.
