Winter walks

How cold is too cold?

There's no single number. It depends on the dog in front of you.

The guide

Above 45°F most dogs are fine

Below 20°F every dog is at risk. In between, size and coat decide.

What changes it

Size, coat, age, wind, wet

Small, thin-coated, young and senior dogs lose heat fastest. Wet fur loses its insulation.

Head home if

Shivering or lifting paws

Hypothermia and frostbite are emergencies. Warm gently and call your vet.

Underfoot

Wipe off salt and antifreeze

De-icer burns pads, and antifreeze is sweet and deadly. Wipe paws after every walk.
