Resource guarding over the food bowl — how do I fix this safely?

My 18-month-old GSD mix started growling at me when I walk past her food bowl about 3 months ago. It escalated last week — she snapped at my hand when I reached toward the bowl (didn't make contact). She's otherwise the most loving dog I've ever had.
I know resource guarding is normal dog behavior but I have two kids (8 and 11) in the house and the snap scared me. Is this something I can fix at home or do I need a professional immediately? And what do I NOT do — I've heard some approaches make it worse.

With children in the home and an escalation to snapping, I'd get a professional involved now — not because it's unfixable, but because the safety stakes are too high for trial and error. Look for a CPDT-KA or IAABC certified trainer with specific resource guarding experience. In the meantime: do NOT reach into the bowl, do NOT punish growling (it removes the warning signal), do NOT do the 'take food away to prove dominance' approach — all of these make guarding worse. Feed in a separate room from kids and manage the situation until you have professional guidance.

The trainer advice is right. What worked for my guarder before we got professional help: tossing high-value treats toward the bowl from a distance so my approach predicted good things. Never taking, always adding. But with kids involved, management first — trainer second, not DIY YouTube second.
