Is grain-free dog food still a concern or has the DCM scare settled down?

When I got my Boxer three years ago the grain-free/DCM thing was everywhere and I switched him back to a grain-inclusive food immediately. Now I keep seeing grain-free foods marketed heavily again and some of my dog friends say the link was never really proven.
Where does the science actually stand on this? My Boxer is 5, healthy heart (vet checks it annually because of the breed), and I've been feeding him Hill's Science Diet. I'm not planning to switch but I'm curious if the concern was overblown or if it's still a real risk.

The FDA investigation is still open but the case reporting slowed significantly. The current thinking is that it wasn't grain-free per se but specific legume-heavy formulations (high pea/lentil protein) that may impair taurine metabolism in certain breeds. Boxers are on the high-risk list for DCM genetically regardless of diet. My honest recommendation: keep your Boxer on grain-inclusive food and continue the annual cardiac checks. The risk isn't worth testing given his breed predisposition.

Vet tech here — we still see the FDA guidance in clinic. For most dogs the risk was probably low, but large and giant breed dogs, especially those with known cardiac predisposition (Boxers, Dobermans, Great Danes), we recommend staying grain-inclusive. Hill's Science Diet is a solid choice for your situation.
